The penalty was imposed after an individual discarded fast-food waste near Tetbury

February 12, 2025

Cotswold District Council has issued an individual £500 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for littering, reinforcing its commitment to keeping public spaces clean and green.

The penalty was imposed after an individual discarded fast-food waste near Tetbury. Following the report of littering by a member of the public, an investigation was carried out by the Council’s Enviro-crimes Programmes Officer and a Fixed Penalty Notice was issued in accordance with local environmental regulations.

Littering is a serious issue that impacts both the environment and the community. The Council is urging residents and visitors to dispose of waste responsibly and use designated bins to avoid penalties.

Cllr Juliet Layton, portfolio holder for regulatory services, said: “We take environmental offences very seriously. Littering not only damages our shared spaces but also harms local wildlife and costs taxpayers money in cleanup efforts. This Fixed Penalty Notice serves as a reminder that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Residents are reminded that littering offences can result in significant fines, with failure to pay leading to further legal action. Anyone who witnesses littering or fly-tipping is encouraged to report it to the Council: https://www.cotswold.gov.uk/environment/litter-street-cleaning-and-dog-fouling/

At the end of 2023 the Council accepted the proposal from the Government to increase the upper limits for various fixed penalty notices (FPNs). The maximum fine for littering increased from £150 to £500.

Cotswold District Council is committed to making the district cleaner, greener and safer for all. Environmental crime such as littering, dog fouling, graffiti and fly tipping causes blight to the countryside. This enforcement action is part of Cotswold District Council’s strategy to improve the district.

Volunteer litter picking and community clean-up events are a great way for the community to be involved. Litter picking equipment, tabards and sacks have been provided to a number town and parish councils.
