A lot has been happening over the Summer and I had the pleasure of attending a number of wonderful events, which were put on by our very special community for our town and residents. These included the Feoffee and Thirteen Community BBQ, Tetfest, Soundhound, Global Warming Talk by John Andrews at The Goods Shed and finally, Tetbury Summer Show, where I took part in the parade with the Child Ambassador Andrew Ellis. Particular thanks must go to the Office and Grounds Team, who decorated and drove the Council truck and to Councillors Coleman, Hirst and O’Connor who represented the Council in the parade.

We also had the news of the closure of the Sports Centre at Sir William Romney’s and following an Extraordinary Meeting of the Town Council, it was resolved for the formation of a Working Group to look at Leisure and Recreation in the town. The first meeting will be held early in September, with representatives from various interested groups.

In addition, I felt that it was important for Cotswold District Council to understand some of the issues currently faced by our Town and asked for the Leader of the Council, Joe Harris, to meet with me here, which he did and I will keep him updated on local matters and will work with the District Council to find solutions for the future.

Please note that our Tetbury Dolphins Inspirational Awards evening is planned to take place once again on Friday 18th October at the Dolphins Hall. If you would like to nominate someone for an award, please contact Tara Niblett at the Town Council officer either by phone 01666 504670 or by email I look forward to celebrating those who inspire us and work hard in our community to make Tetbury the very special place that we live in.

Some of you may not realise, but at the Town Council we have an Emergency Plan for implementation at times of crisis and we are currently updating our list of volunteers and equipment. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer or have equipment or can provide a service in this instance, please contact Tara at the Town Council office – we look forward to hearing from you.

Christmas is coming! I cannot believe that we now only have 16 weeks until Christmas and plans are starting for our Christmas light switch on. If you think you could help us with our organisation, please contact me via the Town Council office.

When Cotswold Volunteer Service withdrew Care Services in Tetbury a few years ago – going into administration – Tetbury Relief in Need Charities took over the banking ONLY, but this service was never set up formally, which prevents us from applying for grant funding and the time has now come for Tetbury to review the situation.

Following a financial review of the first 6 months of 2019, it has become apparent that the Day Centre cannot continue to run at a deficit. The Town and Day Centre have been lucky over the last 2 years to be supported by local charities – The Feoffee and Tetbury Lions and by Tesco – but these funds cannot continue indefinitely and current projections show that the Day Centre service will run out of money by the end of the year.

This is a valuable community facility, which supports not only the clients, but their families for 50 weeks of the year and one which we do not wish to lose, like many other towns in the area have.

In order to act, we wish to create a Community Interest Company to provide Elderly Care Services in the town, which are sustainable. We will need to get a working group to review both the facilities provided and the finances, to enable Elderly Care services to be set up formally and be able to apply for grant funding. This company will need a number of Directors, with limited liability and if you think you could become involved or if you know someone who would like to, please let either myself, Stephen Hirst or Dave Hicks know.

In the meantime, if you think you are able to make a donation towards this valuable service for the elderly in our community, or if you could sponsor a session – currently each place is costing around £20 with attendees being charged £10 – please could you donate by cheque via the Town Council Office – cheques made payable to Tetbury Relief in Need or by BACS direct to the Tetbury Relief in Need bank account – Sort Code 30-92-06 Account Number 01580297 quoting the reference – Your Name with Day Centre or DC, so that we can allocate the funds accordingly. Should you have any question, please contact me via the Town Council Office – Many thanks

Nikki Ind – Mayor
