The Big Switch-On

In the run-up to Christmas, where the shortest days of winter hint at cold days ahead, but also promise the birth of new light and a new year ahead there’s something magical in the way a few simple lights can add warmth and comfort and (let’s face it) the “ahh” factor.

Tetbury’s Community Christmas Lights Switch-On event has always been an occasion full of cheer and warmth with the community coming together to sing carols in anticipation of Christmas and the arrival of new light in the darkness of winter. The festive lights on the Market House, at the entrance to St Marys’ Churchyard, along the streets in the town centre and entwined in the branches of trees on the town’s greens help to make Tetbury look good and feel good in the run-up to Christmas.

Details and timings for this year’s Switch-On

We are planning another “simply brilliant” evening for “The Big Switch-On” 2016 on Thursday 1st December,
with the torchlight procession from St Mary’s Church to the Market House,
carols, music, Santa with elves (with his grotto in the Market House and helping with the switch-on),
a Christmas market and stalls from clubs and organisations that are all part of our little town and
help make it special all year round,
and our shops and cafés opening late, to join in the fun.

If previous years are anything to go by, we expect a huge turnout from the people of Tetbury and visitors,
to join in, share the magic and enjoy an evening in our special little town at a special time of year.

On the night…

  • Church Street will be closed to traffic from 4pm to 8pm and there will be a temporary parking restriction along one side of The Green between 3.00pm and 8.00pm.
  • Avening Silver Band will be at the Market House from 5 o’clock to accompany the carol singing – carol sheets will be provided by stewards on the evening.
  • Those wishing to join the torch-lit procession should assemble in Saint Marys’ church from 5:10pm, where we will distribute glow-sticks and Santa Claus will be on hand to meet and greet     you. The procession will leave at 5:20pm to make its way along Church Street to the Market House.
  • At 5:30pm there will be more carol singing in front of the Market House, with performances from Saint Mary’s school, a highlight of last year’s event.
  • The lights will be turned on officially at 6pm prompt by Mark Cummings of Radio Gloucestershire
assisted by a Star pupil from St. Mary’s Primary School
  • Santa will be available in his Grotto, in the Market House, from 6:15pm until 7:30pm.
Entry for each child will be £2.00 which will include a gift.
  • The delightful Wassailers of Stroud, in traditional costume, will perform between 6.15pm and 7.30pm, to continue the festive entertainment.
  • The evening will continue with market stalls around the Market House and late night shopping throughout the town.

Road Closure and Diversions

Church Street will be closed for the Switch-On event on 1st December from 1600 to 2000.

Traffic coming in from the south will be diverted via The Green,
where parking restrictions will be in place (no parking on one side of the road from 1500 to 2000),
to ensure that route stays open.

The route through The Green is NOT SUITABLE FOR HGVs.

Diversion signs will be posted on the A433 at Westonbirt to divert HGVs around the town.
